October 27th is The US Navy Day. If you are a Navy Wife, then I am sure you hear me when I say I miss my husband every day that he is out at sea.
But, if you decided to go all the way and say your vows, then I guess you were aware of what you were getting into.
Honestly, with all its perks and downsides, I wouldn’t change my navy wife life for anything. And next week (for the US Navy Day) I plan to put on my nautical-style dress, dress my boys in nautical outfits and celebrate this great day.
Being a navy wife leaves me a bit of free time on my hands, and I use it to search the web for new and interesting recipes. A site I found an endless source of great recipes that are suitable for both excellent and not-so-good cooks.
Pancakes Are a Great Way to Celebrate a Special Day
If your significant other has decided to join the navy, then it must be the sailor inside them that had a great deal in it. So, I decided this year me and the boys will celebrate the US Navy day by preparing some pancakes. And not just regular pancakes, but ones that will represent the sea and the navy uniform. I came up with this idea while going through all the these American pancake recipes and saw many colorful stacks of recipes.
Celebrate Navy Day with Blue Colored Pancakes
Much to my boys’ pleasure I started out with the recipe for Rainbow Pancakes. But since we were going for a nautical-inspired pancake stack I decided to use berry blue gelatin powder, to represent the sea, and some lime gelatin powder to give those green nuances the sea has. I topped the pancake stack with some whipped cream and blue, white and green sprinkles and my Nautical Pancakes, as I came to call them were ready for my boys to devour.
The only downside was they looked so inviting, I couldn’t get around to take a picture, I was out of the kitchen for two minutes to grab the camera and the boys had already eaten half of them. I guess you’ll have to trust they turned out GREAT. (The picture you see above was the closest to the original that I could find online J)
Healthy Blue Pancakes
Now, if you think gelatin powder is not really the best solution, even though it is much healthier than food colors, there is one option that is the healthiest out there.
Blueberries. Yup, you can easily add blueberries to a regular pancake batter, or you can even go for the Vegan Blueberry Muffin Pancakes like I did. These soft and fluffy pancakes filled with smashed and whole blueberries are a great way to start your day out fresh and full of energy, but yes, they were also a great way to celebrate Navy Day.
